Les feux de forêt ont fait plus de 20 morts et 550 disparus dans le nord de la Californie

Les incendies ne cessent de s'étendre dans la région viticole très touristique du nord de la Californie. Au moins 21 personnes ont perdu la vie, 550 personnes sont portées disparues et des milliers d'évacuations ont dû être effectuées.

Santa Rosa, la plus grande ville viticole du pays, a été particulièrement touchée.

Les incendies qui font rage dans la région viticole du nord de la Californie ont fait 21 morts et plus de 550 disparus, selon le dernier bilan communiqué mercredi. Les secours redoutent une reprise du vent dans un contexte de sécheresse.

Au total, ce sont près de 69'000 hectares qui ont été détruits par 22 départs de feu dans ce que les autorités locales considèrent comme les plus meurtriers incendies de l'histoire de la Californie.

Au centre des opérations de secours, la porte-parole du comté de Sonoma a indiqué que plus de 550 personnes étaient portées disparues. Elle n'a pas précisé si elles avaient été victimes des flammes ou si elles n'avaient seulement pas pris contact avec les autorités après avoir fui leur habitation.

 

 

"Une zone de guerre"

Santa Rosa, la plus grande ville viticole du pays, a été particulièrement touchée. Des quartiers entiers y ont été brûlés les uns après les autres. "C'est comme de traverser une zone de guerre", a commenté J.J. Murphy, un jeune homme de 22 ans qui fait partie des milliers de personnes évacuées.

Au moins onze personnes ont péri dans le comté de Sonoma. Dans le comté de Napa, un centenaire et son épouse de 98 ans figurent parmi les victimes tandis que treize établissements vinicoles y ont été détruits.

Crainte de nouveaux départs de feu

Des vents soufflant autour de 80 km/h et un taux d'humidité très faible de 10% étaient prévus pour la journée de mercredi et celle de jeudi dans le nord de la Californie. Les pompiers travaillaient mercredi à renforcer les barrières anti-feu en prévision d'une reprise du vent.

"La possibilité de nouveaux départs de feu augmente de manière exponentielle", a estimé une porte-parole de l'office des forêts et de la protection contre les incendies de Californie.

Au nord de San Francisco, des logements ont été détruits dans plusieurs localités, dont celle de Santa Rosa, où un hôtel Hilton a été endommagé et un parc de mobile homes détruit. Plusieurs dizaines de milliers d'habitants ont dû s'enfuir, les écoles sont fermées et deux hôpitaux ont dû être évacués.

 

 

Vignobles ravagés, bâtiments réduits en cendres

Il est encore trop tôt pour évaluer les conséquences économiques des incendies, selon la Napa Valley Vintners, une coopérative qui regroupe 550 exploitations vinicoles. Mais quatre d'entre elles ont été totalement ou en grande partie détruites et neuf ont subi des dégâts. Les vendanges étaient achevées à 90% quand les sinistres se sont déclarés.

Le gouverneur de Californie Jerry Brown a déclaré l'état d'urgence dans plusieurs comtés de la partie septentrionale de l'Etat mais aussi dans le comté d'Orange, dans le sud, qui est également touché. Un incendie a parcouru plus de 3000 hectares. Quatorze bâtiments ont été réduits en cendres, 22 sont endommagés et 5000 habitants ont dû être évacués.
