Portugal: la lutte contre l'incendie se poursuit dans le centre du pays à l'heure des premières funérailles

L'immense feu de forêt continue de tout détruire dans le centre du Portugal. Depuis samedi, les pompiers poursuivent leur travail pour tenter d'éteindre ce gigantesque brasier qui a fait plus de 60 morts. Les premières victimes ont été ensevelies mardi, non loin des zones encore ravagées par les flammes.

Les flammes continuent de ravager le centre de Portugal, alors que les premières victimes ont été ensevelies.

Exténués, un millier de pompiers poursuivaient mercredi dans le centre du Portugal leur combat sans relâche contre l'immense incendie qui fait rage depuis samedi. Au même moment, les funérailles des premières victimes suscitaient une forte émotion dans le pays.

L'immense incendie autour de Pedrogao Grande, qui avait démarré samedi, "est sous contrôle", c'est-à-dire circonscrit mais non éteint, a annoncé le commandant régional de la protection civile Vitor Vaz Pinto.

Cependant, "il y a eu des reprises de feu fortes, attisées par l'intensification du vent" autour de la commune de Gois, plus au nord, où se concentrent désormais les foyers les plus importants, a expliqué le responsable local de la protection civile Carlos Tavares.

Dix-huit personnes ont été légèrement blessées dans cette zone. Elles souffrent surtout d'intoxications à cause de la fumée toujours omniprésente. Les habitants de trois hameaux ont pu retourner chez eux, sur les quelque 40 évacués la veille.

Piste criminelle?

Le brasier de Pedrogao Grande, qui a fait 64 morts et 204 blessés, était brusquement reparti mardi dans les environs de Gois.

Le président de la Ligue des pompiers a relancé l'hypothèse d'une origine criminelle de l'incendie, alors que la police avait écarté dès dimanche cette piste, au profit de celle d'un orage sec au cours duquel la foudre aurait embrasé la forêt.

"Je pense, jusqu'à preuve du contraire, (...) que l'incendie est d'origine criminelle", a déclaré aux médias locaux Jaime Marta Soares. Selon lui, "l'incendie avait déjà débuté depuis deux heures" samedi, lorsque l'orage a éclaté.

 

Réponses "claires" exigées

"Le pays exige des réponses claires à des doutes légitimes" sur les origines du drame, a réagi le président du Parlement Eduardo Ferro Rodrigues durant une séance solennelle consacrée aux victimes de la tragédie.

Sur le terrain, les autorités locales s'inquiétaient du refus de certaines personnes de quitter leurs maisons malgré les ordres d'évacuation. Dans le village d'Alcafaz, près de Gois, six habitants rencontrés par l'AFP ont ainsi décidé de rester coûte que coûte, mouillant le sol et débroussaillant avec des outils agricoles, par crainte que les secours n'arrivent jamais.

Corbillards

La météo portugaise prévoyait des conditions "plus favorables" à la lutte contre l'incendie, avec des températures en assez nette baisse, qui ne devaient pas dépasser les 35°C, contre près de 43°C la veille, et un taux d'humidité plus élevé.

Les avions de lutte anti-incendie poursuivaient leur ballet dans le ciel de la région, tandis qu'au sol 1200 pompiers et 400 véhicules arpentaient les collines. Une minute de silence a été observée dans le pays à 13h00 (14h00 suisses). Pour l'occasion, le président Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa s'était rendu à Pedrogao Grande, où tout a commencé.

Il devait assister en fin de journée aux funérailles d'un pompier, tandis que dans l'après-midi d'autres cérémonies ont eu lieu dans la zone. La télévision portugaise montrait les images d'habitants bouleversés se rassemblant autour d'un corbillard, sous un soleil de plomb.

"Martyrs", titre le quotidien Correo da Manha en Une, publiant les photos des proches en pleurs, aux côtés des portraits des victimes, parfois des familles entières, dont plusieurs très jeunes enfants. Les cérémonies devaient se poursuivre mercredi.
