Last weekend there was a four-page article in «Le Matin Dimanche» purely on roundabouts. The feature talked about the proliferation of roundabouts in this country and how “Les giratoires font tourner les Romands en rond”.
Spending one’s weekend reading about roundabouts may sound a bit bizarre but I confess I found it rather interesting. Apparently it was the British who invented the roundabout. Did we? I had no idea. I then looked online and discovered that “The roundabout is said to have flourished in Britain because it requires the British virtues of compromise and cooperation”. Really? They obviously haven’t been on a roundabout in rush hour in some parts of Britain. Compromise and cooperation often seem to be abandoned in the mad dash to get home.
