Living in Nyon: Blooming Lovely in Switzerland

I remember an aunt once saying this to me when I was young. At the time I probably rolled my eyes and thought the comment extremely boring. Skip a few decades and I now know exactly what she meant.

If you have been reading this column over the past few weeks, you will recall I have been in England for almost a month. It’s the longest I have ever been away from Switzerland for many a year, and although it’s great to be back, I see that in my absence, lots of plants on my balcony have bloomed and now faded. I also missed seeing Nyon’s magnificent lakeside magnolia at its peak and in all its glory. It still is in bloom but its petals are turning brown and are past their best.

I never go away on holiday in spring, there’s too much work to do in the garden....
