Last weekend I went to a birthday party of a good friend who used to live in Nyon. He and his wife moved to Vienna a few years ago, so when I received an invitation to his 60th, an event which was to be held in a schloss very near the border of the Czech Republic, it was too good an opportunity to turn down. It was a chance to explore a part of Europe that I didn’t know. So I went and stayed for a few nights in the town of Brno. Famous for its modernist buildings and the home of Gregor Mendel, the father of genetics, it has a lovely old central square, which is home to a very big vegetable market.
