«Regarde! There’s one! Over there!”

Looking up to where my friend was pointing, I saw the tail end of a shooting star. It was last Sunday and we were at a viewing spot at 1300 metres in the Valais. We had been waiting in the dark for quite a while with our necks straining to the sky waiting for the show to start. I was beginning to lose hope of seeing anything at all on a weekend that had been billed as a “spectacular event” for stargazers.

Although the sky was dark there still was some light pollution from the town of Sion down below us. Nevertheless, the conditions were near enough perfect. Other people there that night were very well prepared for the celestial occasion, with hot drinks and warm clothes to keep them going whilst they watched it all.
