Living in Nyon: The Pain Surprise - The best thing since sliced bread

I had never heard of, or seen a pain surprise until I arrived in Switzerland. When I first came across one served at a cocktail party, I was delighted by it. The combination of the pretty pattern on the top of the circular loaf and the guessing of what filling will come next inside the different layers, make a great combination. I have since ordered quite a few from a boulangerie in Nyon, particularly when I have British guests. They are always surprised by it.

I am not sure why this baked beauty hasn’t caught on in Britain. After all, we are rather good at making sandwiches. You only need to look at the rows of them in stores such as M & S and the sheer choice of wonderful fillings available, it’s strange that this Swiss idea hasn’t caught on and crossed the Channel.
