Incendie de la tour à Londres: un frigo défectueux à l'origine du drame

L'incendie de Londres qui a fait au moins 79 morts a été provoqué par un frigo défectueux, informe vendredi la police britannique.

Le drame a fait au moins 79 morts.

La police britannique n'exclut pas des poursuites pour "homicide" après l'incendie meurtrier de la tour Grenfell à Londres, qui a fait au moins 79 morts. Elle a indiqué que le feu avait eu pour point de départ un réfrigérateur. Le revêtement installé en 2016 est mis en cause dans la propagation des flammes.

L'enquête sur les circonstances du drame s'intéresse à "toutes les infractions possibles en matière de santé, de sécurité et de sécurité incendie", a déclaré à la presse Fiona McCormack, l'une des responsables de la police scientifique de la capitale britannique.

Sera également passé en revue le rôle "de toutes les entreprises impliquées dans la construction et la rénovation de la tour", a-t-elle ajouté. La tour Grenfell, un immeuble de logements sociaux de 24 étages, a été ravagée la semaine dernière par un violent incendie qui a fait au moins 79 morts, ou disparus présumés morts.

"Je m'attends à ce que ce nombre change", a dit Mme McCormack, car le nombre de disparus n'est pas définitif. De plus, les corps de certaines victimes ont été réduits en cendres par la violence de l'incendie, ce qui complique le travail pour les trouver. L'incendie, la pire catastrophe du genre depuis la Seconde Guerre mondiale en Grande-Bretagne, a démarré dans la nuit du 13 au 14 juin.

Pour le moment, neuf des victimes ont été formellement identifiées. Tous "les corps complets" ont été sortis de la tour, a-t-elle dit, soulignant que le travail de la police scientifique pourrait se prolonger jusqu'à la fin de l'année.

 

 

Pas intentionnel

Mme McCormack a par ailleurs confirmé que l'incendie n'était pas intentionnel. Il est parti du compartiment congélation d'un réfrigérateur de marque Hotpoint, fabriqué par le numéro un mondial de l'électroménager Whirlpool.

"Nous nous occupons de la question de la manière la plus urgente qui soit et assistons les autorités", a déclaré dans un communiqué le groupe dont le siège est aux Etats-Unis. Whirlpool a entamé des tests sur le modèle incriminé, le FF175BP. Il a par ailleurs appelé les propriétaires de modèles FF175BP et FF175BG à se faire connaître auprès de ses services.

La police a souligné que l'enquête devait déterminer pourquoi le réfrigérateur a pris feu. Mais elle devra surtout étudier comment l'incendie a pu s'étendre aussi vite à tout le bâtiment, au-dessus du deuxième étage.

Le revêtement en cause

Le nouveau revêtement, installé en 2016, a été mis en cause dans cette propagation. "Nous allons examiner la construction du bâtiment, sa rénovation" et la manière dont le revêtement de la façade a été installé, a dit Mme McCormack.

 

 

Les panneaux d'isolation de ce revêtement étaient composés de polyéthylène (plastique), enchâssé entre deux couches d'aluminium, "très fines, d'environ 4 millimètres d'épaisseur", selon la société Harley Facade qui les a installés.

Les enquêteurs ont par ailleurs établi que les isolants et les tuiles de revêtement utilisés dans la tour avaient échoué à tous les tests de protection incendie. "Des essais préliminaires montrent que les échantillons d'isolant récupérés sur la tour Grenfell ont rapidement pris feu après le début du test", a dit la commissaire McCormack.
